We took both kids to the allergist, Nolan for a re-test and to test a few more things and Alivia's 1st test. We discovered Nolan is allergic to many, many tree nuts and coconut. Making him dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, and coconut free. Alivia was surprising also allergic to coconut and hazelnut. I feel so bad- we didn't have Nolan tested for tree nuts or coconut when he first got tested in his 1st year of life. We only tested for dogs and cats and the top 8 allergies. We transitioned from dairy using coconut and almond products. He did get better, but has been battling eczema all his little life. We now realized it was from all the coconut and almond he was eating. I stayed away from all nuts when I first found out about his peanut allergies, but since I was a nursing mom and I needed more energy, I decided to add nuts back into my diet. Nolan has never eaten any other nut besides almond (almond butter and almond milk), but one day (recently, before his re-test) I gave him some raisins and chocolate out of some homemade trail mix and he had a bad breakout. At that point, I decided to take all tree-nuts out of his diet because I just wasn't sure what broke him out. Turns out he is highly allergic to the majority of tree nuts. And coconut, oh my word. I used coconut in like everything, including our skin/hair care. No wonder he wasn't getting any better. Fortunately, he is not as highly allergic to these items as other foods so they never sent him into a crazy allergy attack, but they have been contributing to his skin issues.
We were a lost on what kind of milk to give him, we decided to stick with rice milk, which we have been drinking in addition to the almond and coconut milk. And as weird as it sounds, we have added a sunflower drink as well. It tastes most like almond milk-thicker than rice milk. We just bought the vanilla sunflower drink that we can give to the kids for a nice treat, since we can no longer buy the dark chocolate almond milk- soooo good. We did try organic soy milk, since neither kid has an allergy to it, but we are just not comfortable giving them that much soy and we didn't love the taste of it.
Instead of coconut oil, we are using grapeseed oil, olive oil, and avocado oil. I also purchased some vegan earth balance spread for bread and such since I was using coconut oil and now can't.
I have completely eliminated any kind of yogurt. They loved coconut milk yogurt, it really was a great addition to breakfast. Fortunately, they haven't complained too much about not having if for the last several weeks.
