The kids have wanted a dog for years. Ben and I decided that we really didn't want to get a puppy when the kids were young. I told the kids that when Eliyanah potty trained that we could get a dog. Well, I opened up my big mouth because Ellie potty trained pretty young and I just wasn't ready for a dog. Ben and I explained why it still wasn't a good time and although unhappy, the kids understood. We then told them that we would know when it was a good time to get a dog and that the perfect opportunity was arise when it was time. And here is the story of our perfect opportunity!
During quarantine time, the kids and I took daily walks. On one walk, we came upon 3 dogs and the kids played with them for an hour. The owner said he though his dog, Maggie, might be pregnant again. It didn't take Alivia but 1 second to ask if we could have one if she was pregnant and our neighbor said we could have first pick once he confirmed she was really indeed pregnant. Well, soon enough we found out that she was 100% pregnant with her 2nd litter. We saw Mr. Mike and those dogs daily and received updates. The early morning of July 10, 2020, I got a message from our neighbor informing us that Maggie had 13 puppies. We went over and picked out our puppy that day. Mr. Mike's daughter offered to foster Maggie and the puppies because her and her 2 roommates had more time and more hands. They live in Denver so the puppies were transported to their foster home 2 days after their birth. We were all a little bummed that we couldn't see the puppies daily but Kaylene sent us text updates and pictures often. We went to visit our puppy that we choose, Rory, at 3 weeks so the kids could see the growth in real life. My mom was to get a dog from the litter too but she decided after much thought that it wasn't the right time. After seeing the kids with the puppies, we surprised the kids and told them we would keep the dog my mom was going to get. I know we are crazy, but we don't plan to go through the puppy process again and you only live once right?! Another family really liked the dog that was intended to go to my mom and since we got our first pick with Rory, we agreed that they should get their first pick too. We renamed our 2nd dog Izzy. They came home to us today on September 5, 2020, just in time for our first early snow on Tuesday. We look forward to many memories, lots of cuddles, and increased outdoor time with these two cute dogs.
