Our Birth Story, Happy New Year!

Before we went to the hospital. It all started on what we thought was a typical Thursday morning- little did we know that this day would change our life forever. Ben had a few errands to run so he dropped me off at work. I only had to work a half day since it was December 31, 2009. I had two doctor appointments after work and then we were going to run a couple more errands, so to be prepared when our baby decided to enter the world. We went to my chiropractic appointment where my doctor gave me more suggestions on how to potentially turn Baby Spiers. After my 1st appointment we went to my OBGYN appointment- where we thought it would be a quick appointment like many before, but we were wrong. My doctor was on vacation at my 38 week appointment so she was unaware that Baby Spiers was breech; therefore, we had a lot to talk about with our doctor. After discovering that Baby Spiers was healthy in the womb, our doctor presented what she thought would be best for us. We were there for 2 hours, discussing options with each other and with our doctor. Options: 1) Inversion, in hopes that she will turn. 2) Cesarean Section later in the afternoon. 3) Wait until Monday to see if she turns naturally, otherwise will turn to Cesarean Section with no inversion option. We were very torn on what to do hence the 2 hours at the doctor's office. We opted to try the inversion first before shooting straight for a Cesarean Section. At this point it was past 2:00 p.m. so instead of grocery shopping or returning Christmas items, we went home! I took a shower to try to relax, after hearing the shocking news that New Year's Eve could be my baby's birthday. We headed to the hospital after finishing packing a few items and getting as ready and relaxed as I could get. Ben and I got to the hospital about 4:30 p.m. and I was admitted right away. We had to wait an hour or so before my doctor made it to the hospital to try the inversion. During this time, I was getting really nervous about the inversion technique, because I was worried about the pain of it all. When the doctor arrived at the hospital, she did an ultrasound of Baby Spiers and decided it was too dangerous to complete the inversion because her fluid/water was too low. So we now had two options-Cesarean Section now or wait until Monday... It was such a hard decision to make, but we decided not to wait because it seemed that it was safer to have our baby sooner rather than wait. I had a melt down after we decided to go through with the surgery, because I really wanted to have an all natural birth and this was quite the opposite to my vision of how I thought it would go. I also did not want to have the spinal tap, the thought of a needle in my back scared me a lot. Everything happened so fast after we decided to have our baby. Ben got prepped to be in the room and they brought me in the surgery room to get me prepared. Ben came in the room to be with me and before we knew it, we heard a baby's cry! Alivia Ashleigh Spiers was born at 7:46 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and 20 inches long! She is such a beauty! We rang in the new year with our new baby and many friends and Family members. Baby Alivia Ashleigh Spiers! Mom with Baby Dad with Baby Ringing in the New Year After Alivia was born, we discovered that the Cesarean Section was the best option for us because 1) she was a breech baby, 2) her fluids were getting low, and 3) the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck two times. I think God prepared us for the decision in a few ways. We had come up with Alivia's middle name on Wednesday, December 30th. I did not eat much all day on Thursday, which ended up being a blessing in disguise because of the shot I had to get. We had got the house all ready and the bags packed earlier in the week. God sure did know how to prepare us even though we did not know I was going to have to deliver Alivia by Cesarean Section. We are proud and happy parents and love Alivia so much already!!! We look forward to all the moments that we will experience with her!
